I'm considering trying out Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the standalone hypervisor).
Two questions:-
1) how do you manage it remotely? I've got RSAT on my W7 desktop with the Hyper-V Manager. Is that enough?
2) does it support software RAID-1, like the full Server 2008 does, and how do you configure it? The hardware I'm using doesn't have RAID.
I've previously used VMware Server running under Windows Server. I'm trying to move to Hyper-V.

If you are looking to a solution for managing multiple virtualised appliances then i would look towards System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (SCVMM)

You may want to have a look at System Centre Virtual Machine manager (expecily if you will be looking after multiple servers) but Hyper-V manager on a Windows 7/2008 R2 will do all the essential tasks.

It looks like the RSAT will do what I need. It's not worth paying for, for us, at the moment.
Yeah For General Tasks RSAT is fine to do all of this, Fail Over Manager is Nice if you have this in place but RSAT will do everything you require it's all I use.

how is hyper-v nowadays? kinda of reminds of ten years ago netware vs windows? no way I would trust windows for file and print sharing. I do use it nowadays. kinda feel the same about hyper-v vs vmware? will vmware become like novell in ten years? technically superior product lost out to free bundled with windows?
I think Hyper-V has come a long way - you need System Centre to make it totaly worth while (thats where the cost is) but its on par with Citrix/VmWare and has a few extra bits that make it stand out (then again so does Citrix/VmWare).
If you have a MS schools agreement then cost is very low - run 2008 datacenter and you can run unlimited virtual servers at no extra cost.
Have 8 virtual servers here and it has been rock solid - can also use MS DPM to back up virtual machines.
Just what we do here - can't wait for the first of the VDI boxes to arrive, won't be running Hyper-V (due to the VDI software we will be using) but plan to change over once the updated version comes out.Quote:

VMware Server hasn't had any major upgrades for a long time, or any minor ones for a while either. It looks like VMware have lost interest in it and slowed development.
personally i wasn't talking about vmware server. and i see no reason to use it. i was talking about ESX(i)
once set up hyperv bare metal is fine. I got it working once then tried to repeat it and i just couldn't get the remote management working making it pointless lol anyone got any good guides to it?
what part can you not get working? have you turned the remote management on? as that is all you need to do apart from running the commands in CMD for the Firewall - see this blog for info rather then me typing it outQuote:
