I've just had a call from one of my schools, which has just had some major building work and re-wiring.
Their IT suite, where the Server's are located, is working fine, the rest of school however is not - no internet, no server drives etc. We've only just taken over this site from the LEA, and the setup is a bit of a mess (it's infected with conficker aswell)...
I've remoted in to both servers (which sit next to eachother), they both look fine at the moment (despite the obvious conficker). However, watching them for about 10 minutes, and pinging one of the office machines at the other side of school, the response times on the PDC jump from 1-30 for about 5 minutes, then i lose connection for about 5 seconds. I'm heading over later on today... should I be looking for a loopback in the new networking cab or is it conficker rearing it's ugly head?
Further to this, when I ping the PDC from the other server, no packets are lost when I lose connection to the PDC?!!??!
conficker would cause a bit of an issue but NOT what you are describing.
A loopback would be the obvious cause, but it may not just be in the comms cab. I have seen 2 network points pluged into each other in different rooms before causing all sorts of issues.
Also are all of the services that SHOULD be running, running? or have they stopped or paused?
Look for loopback in all classrooms and on mini hubs.
check the comms and if all the lights are flashing together or crazzy like, start pulling cables out off switches one by one. When the lights return to normal take a note of the port and find that port in the school, it will have the issue.
only if there is one loop I had 8 loops in one school had to search every room and network point!!
