Installing Software though GPO

Hi all. Is there a basic noob gudie to installing software (flash, Java, ect) though group policley.

I just tired and i getting the message in the event viewer.

probably try another msi that one might be less than 100% or an old version of flash interfered etc

basically it varies from program to program the deploy method is the same unless it requires an mst file in which case you select advanced and add it to the transforms tab

flash/shock work stock

java/acrobat "need" an mst if only to get rid off eula in case of acrobat or make active in ie/ff in the case of java

FN-GM pointed me towards a MS script along with a few of his own tweaks that really make it painless. It's not pushed through AD though as an MSI deployment, instead it's deployed via start up script.

Would it be possible to make it a start up script?

Yes but in a lot of cases it amounts to the same thing. A script that says msiexec /i somet.msi transforms=something.mst is the same as adding it to a gpo without easy removal

Can i add more than 1 msi to install?

Yes you can have as many per policy as you want

This is a LOT more involved than that. The problem with Java and pushing it out through AD is it'll break itself when performing the uninstall of any previous versions. This VB script does a better job of uninstalling Java than the actual installer released by Oracle does. You're going to run into issues pushing out a Java MSI without running the cleanup script first, trust me.

I've had good luck with Java MSIs so far by doing forced removes from the GPO before adding the new version rather than doing it as an upgrade. This has worked quite well for many versions so far. I may just have been lucky though.

Apart from one revision that needed a service stopped years ago thats my experience as well
