    Folder Replication from 2003 to 2008 R2

We currently run a 2003 network and have recently purchased a new server which we have installed 2008 R2. The new server has been added to the Domain and ideally since it was provisioned with a reasonable amount of storgae space I would like to replicate the staff documents from a 2003 R2 server onto this box (the current 2003 R2 server is also a secondary DC). I could hopefully then improve the quota size given to staff and hopefully stop the complaints.

My first question is can I use DFS which is currently set up on the 2003 servers to replicate to the 2008 R2 box keeping all folder permissions ? If so how as when I open DFS on the 2008 R2 server the DFS snap in shows no namespaces set up.

Secondly, we would like to use this server as a Secondary DC to enable use of the new Group policy settings to control Win 7 machines. How do I go about the Domain prep from 2003 to a mixedmode domain. Do I need to DCpromo the 2003 DC to 2008 and then to 2008 R2 or can I just carry out the one step. I'm aware that there are other prep steps to carry out but any advice on the process would be welcome.

The plan ideally is once the staff documents and SDC are up and running is to change the folder redirection to the new box and to demote the 2003 R2 box and use it as an application server.

Yes you can use DFS. You'll need to create the namespace (eg domain.name/staffhome, but you can put the existing share into this namespace so when you set up the new DFS-R server, it begins to replicate across.

You'll need to adprep and forestprep the current domain to 2008 R2, using the disc/ISO and the tools contained within. How to Run ADPREP for Windows Server 2008
