Deploy with MSI not working 2008r2 + win7 clients

Ever since we went to 2008R2 its been really hit or miss trying to deploy msi via GPO. Is there anything different that needs done in 2008r2/7 that wasnt there in 2003/2008/xp ?

Gpresult shows the policy is being applied, but the software just isnt installing.

Clickview and AB tutor are 2 this week that Im struggling with.

weirdly we had some issues - in the end we realised that for every gpo to be applied we had to set permissions - 'Authenticated Users - Read'

this worked for us. Maybe those with more knowledge will correct me.

Are these new MSI's added to old policies. We had issues with that where adding new packages would corrupt the old GPOs. Recreated them and it worked fine, they were from Windows 2000 after all so they probably were a bit sus

Are the share and ntfs permissions of the computer can read them to install them.

Have you put a wmi filter in that will stop it working or changed the permissions on the gpo to stop it working

I had issues like this, and then found that the site was running at the Windows 2000 domain and forest levels. Upgrading these helped quite a lot with some GPO processings.
