Server Backup stopped working
just wondering has anyone else come across this problem before i am using the windows server 2008 r2 built-in backup feature which has been working great for the last year but from last week for some reason it failed everyday, also if I try doing a single backup it fails with the following error: there is not enough free space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. I am trying to backup the files onto a 500gb hard drive and the total space that this is using is only 350GB, I have tried doing the same backup onto a 1.5TB hard drive and I get the same error message.
Does anyone know why this would be happening is it trying to create the shadow copy onto the hard drive or does it try to create the copy elsewhere?
any help would be much appreciated

You could check the event logs, but to be honest, the built in Windows Server Backup in 2008 R2 isn't brilliant.
If you purchase Backup Assist, this uses Windows Server Backup but provides a lot more information, e-mail reporting and a nice GUI to work with.
I use this on all my 2008 R2 servers.

found out what seems to be the problem i have set a Quota so that users cannot go over a certain limit when i do this for some reason it then sets the drive to that limit which doesnt have enough storage space to make a VSS copy although when i setup Quota's but dont tick Deny disk space to uses exceeding quota limit it works fine.

when i setup the Quote it changed the NT AUTHORITY\ SYSTEM to the quota limit which then causes under disk management the drive to be the limit size. So i just made sure that Builtin\administrators and NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM were both set to NO LIMIT and the drive backups work now
