SIMS FMS RemoteApps on Server 2008 R2

    Hello All,

We are doing a proof-of-concept based on the RemoteApps technology which is available on Server 2008 R2.

We are trying to publish the SIMS applications including FMS. Everything is working correctly except FMS is not mapping or redirecting the printers that the remote user has. Printing from sims is fine and the printers in word, and sims are fine i.e. it correctly maps the default printer of the remote user.

Obviously FMS complains if there are no printers installed so we installed a dummy printer on the server. When a user tries to print, it sends the print jobs to the local printer installed on the server rather than the user's re-directed printer.

All the TS easyprint components are enabled.

    Any advice or suggestions?

    TIA,

    Ash.

SIMS uses standard windows printer management.

FMS has some crappy inbuilt print system and doesnt use the windows standards.

    Hi,

I feel your pain. We’ve been distributing SIMS and FMS to workstations through remote app for the last couple of years. Our biggest headache has always been printing in FMS but we have finally got to the bottom of it.

The problem is that finance is very impatient. It captures the printers at the point it is launched rather than waiting until printing is actually needed. This is a problem because when a terminal services connection is made, printers are not mapped until after the application has actually launched. This means FMS thinks no printers are attached because terminal service has not yet had chance to map the printers.

We got around this by writing a small application that waits 10 seconds before launching FMS. This gives the TS connection time to map the printers before FMS runs and captures them.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Ian,

Thanks for the info, that seems a good explaination. I'll try creating a batch file to delay the lauch of the application i.e. using the sleep command and see how it goes.

    @Ian,

Your trick has worked, we now make it wait 15 seconds using a batch file and then lauching the FMS Application. It working correctly now and printing as well

    Thansk for your help.

Hi there, could someone give me a heads up on the commands I need to use and how to implement such a script for TS remoteapps only.

    Many Thanks in advance
