Is there anything to get around this please? If we go down this route we will want something that will just work, IE the end user doesnt notice anything. Thanks.

Ive installed a new instance of Exchange 2010 with all the roles onto 2008R2 Enterprise, what do I need to do to move evertything onto this new server so I can wipe the old 2008R2 Standard and re-install with Enterprise?

I don't see why you need to flatten and rebuild just to upgrade the OS especially as they are all the same code set?

Right I've finally got this set up. Windows server VPN between the 2 sites, Exchange installed on them both, DAG configured and both servers added to the DAG.

However when I try to replicate the database, it processes for about an hour and then fails with this message:

    Code:
    Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed.
    Elapsed time: 01:17:17

    PMG
    Failed

    Error:
Processing data for a remote command failed with the following error message: The WinRM client cannot complete the operation within the time specified. Check if the machine name is valid and is reachable over the network and firewall exception for Windows Remote Management service is enabled. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.

    Exchange Management Shell command attempted:
    update-MailboxDatabaseCopy -Identity 'PMG\EXCHANGE' -DeleteExistingFiles

    Elapsed Time: 01:17:17
Admittedly the 2 sites are both on consumer grade ADSL which isnt lightnight fast, but the database is only about 1500mb so not sure why it keeps failing?

Would it not be more worthwhile setting your Virtual infrastructure up to use high availability? If you are virtualizing the servers then it is highly unlikely that the VM will have a wobble without the host/storage wobbling too, which more than likely means the other parts of your Exchange cluster will fall over at the same time. Sort your virtual servers to failover nicely, load balance the hosts and the like and you won't have to worry about setting up multiple Exchange boxes at all.

EDIT: Sorry didn't realize the majority of this post was oldish & you were well on your way to doing this!! That'll teach me to skim!

Its a 300ms ping between the sites, this jumps to about 1000ms once i start to try to copy the database.

I seem to remember reading somewhere on here that it failed out with large latencys I think 1500ms was being bandied about but my memory could well be floored. If it is to do with the datarate crushing the link speed perhaps there is some throghtling or packet optimisation that can be done to compensate.

Ive screwed it all up. The database is only at one end as it wont replicate, but it now will not mount at all because it cannot see the other node. So the entire DB is offline.

And I cannot remove the DAG because it has servers added to it. And I cannot remove the servers from it because it cannot see the other end.

    Oops
