    DHCP not working as expected

This is all done virtually, by the way, via VMWare, so if this ought to be in the virtual forums, can an admin please move it? Thanks!

    Down to business..
I'm probably doing everything wrong since this is a rather 'in-at-the-deep-end' experiment, but in an effort to learn more about the server-side gubbins of networking I'm trying to build a virtual DC. It also is to function as the DNS and the DHCP.

I have the server with the roles added and I've set up the DHCP pool. (192.168.128.128 - 192.168.128.144)
I've added pool rules stating Default Gateway is 192.168.128.254, and the DNS server is at 192.168.128.1 - this should allow a client using a DHCP address to locate the DNS server and connect to the domain, right? Only that's not how it's playing out. Bizarrely, IPv4 address and on the client is wrong. It's getting a default gateway of .2 and I'm thoroughly confused.

Compare the IPCONFIG results of ATLAS (192.168.128.2) to the DHCP lease (192.168.128.1)

    DHCP2.PNG
The default gateway should be 192.168.128.254. I have no idea where it's getting 192.168.128.2 from.

You don't have another DHCP server kicking around on the same broadcast domain do you? Like a DSL modem/router or something that could be answering the station first. It looks suspiciously like that.

This - check it is getting DHCP from that server.

also look to see what is set under serve options - as additional settings can be put here here.

The VMWare software uses 192.168.126.xxx you need to change the network connection type so it will acquire one, something along the lines of bridged it is worded.

So, after coming in on Monday and changing literally nothing, it works.
It got the right default gateway, DHCP server and IP from DHCP now and when I attempted to join it to the domain, it found it straight away.

If there's anything I hate more than a problem, it's a problem that fixes itself D:
    Grumble.
