Very slow saving times to H: drive and other shared areas!
Hopefully you can help me out. Whenever a student or teacher saves to their Home Drive from Word etc... It just sits there for 3-5 minutes (save bar full) and then after that time it saves. Though it stops them using the computer while they're saving as the computers come up with not responding on Office Applications until it saves!
Anyone have any idea why saving times are so slow Be big help as teachers don't like waiting Haha!!!

Sorry but have you tried the lazy fix (off and on again) your server.

does this happen to you as well, if not then it could be a permissions causing the slowness.

Hi Mate, Yesy I've tried this nothing has happened. It only seems to be Microsoft Office that's having the issue. Notepad and most other applications are quick as hell :/

@Grey-gear, Yes mate it happens to me also and I'm admin with no restriction's at all. Just mapped the drive and saved from word takes ages!!! Its the same for Shares of which everyone has access to also with no security permissions??

I can't remember the exact cause or fix, but I'm sure I've had a similar issue years ago.
It was something to do with a broken link to a network drive that Office spends ages trying to contact, before it gives up.
Other things I can think of are more to do with the physical drive where the share is, have you checked it's ok, enough space etc?
Maybe someone more experienced might pick up on something if you can explain the layout of your system? VM or whatever...
Are there other shares on that drive, what else is going on with that server? Any other file you can save there, just to narrow it down to Office?

Thankyou, it's definitely just Office. I don't have VM's we couldn't afford it! Instead we have 4 Servers running a file server, Smoothwall, Backup and Domain Controller. The DC controls obviously AD and Group Policy and holds a few other things on it's hard drive like Software to be installed. The DC tells the accounts to map a staff share, student share and H: drive all to the File Server. We have 8TB of storage on the file server so it's not a size issue. I have tried using IP and Name of the server and both happen with the same outcome. I have tried big applications such as photoshop and that saves perfectly fine it's just Office applications.

I know you may have tried this but have you tried to re-install office to see if that fixes the problem?
What version of office are you using?

Had a quick look online and this seems to be the best one I could find: -http://joshuabrauer.com/2006/02/slow-save-as-microsoft-office-applicaitons
not sure if it relates though.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions have tried the Hotfix and used some of the suggested on Grey-gears post but still nothing. I was really hoping the Hotfix would work

Did you scroll further down in the thread of the link that @witch gave about SAFE MODE, and other suggestions.
Was the Hotfix for the client or server, do they require a reboot?
Is it ALL Office applications?
Do they do it to other shares, or just H:\ drive?
What about saving to the local machine?
When did you notice this and what has changed?
Just trying to troubleshoot and narrow down the options...

Hi Mate, Yeah tryed Safe Mode too still the same issue !!
Yes it is all of the Office Applications
They do it for all Shares
Saving to the Local Machine is fine although Users don't have access to the Local Machine only Mapped Drives
This started happening as soon as I put a new network infastructure in the school they were using generic user accounts, all accounts where administrators, no group policy..... the list goes on so naturally I locked all users down set GP for teacher and students and mapped home drives to them all. I dont want to give them access to C: drive as it will cause us issues as it has before
