Never tried it directly on server, but I use this normally: Path Too Long | Filename too long | Filename is too long | Path too long utility to delete/rename any I need unlocked

We found that free programs never worked for us, so here's what we do to get rid of these annoying files.

Open up Command Prompt and type on seperate lines:

    Code:
    h:
    cd RMUsers\Students\Work\Year11
    cd User123
    rmdir /S a
    What it does:

    h: - Changes to H: Drive
cd RMUsers\Students\Work\Year11 - Changes Directory to Year 11 folder
cd User123 - Changes Directory to that user
    rmdir /S a - Removes Directory called a

If the folder has a space in it, e.g My Settings, make sure you use " " around the word. e.g The removal command should look like this: rmdir /S "My Settings"

    Hope this helps!

    @kevin_lane:

If you require a tool 7zip which is free will allow you to delete and move files and folders with long file names. 7-Zip

Its a great tool for zipping up files and you can get a plugin development tool which lets you create self extracting files which work great when installing an application throughout the schools computer systems if it requires wrapping up.

    Enjoy but use carefully

If I get the problem I just map a network drive to wherever the location, for example if I am accessing N:\pupils\year11\student\longnameblah blah\
I would map a new network drive to wherever N is and then pupils\year11\student, which shortens the path, then delete or rename to my hearts content.

OH, and I make sure to give the kid a kick next time I see them

+1 for this solution. Been using this method for years.
