Windows 2003 RM CC3 Server Hang

Hey!!

We have a windows 2003 RM CC3 network with a weird problem. Every so often (and we cant identify a pattern) our main Forest Root server just hangs, bringing with it a whole network freeze. Sometimes the server comes back to life other times, we have to turn it off and on (you cant even shut it down). There are no entries being made to the even logs in any folders - everything looks fine! The symptoms point to a server hardware problem but I'm not convinced.

I want to monitor the server to see if I can find out what its doing when it goes wrong. What tools do you guys use to do this? Network Monitor just churns our loads of low level stuff that dosnt make a lot of sense to me. I was hoping that there might be something similar to the debug facility within Exchange where you can have the system write lots of info to the event logs? Not sure what values to select in Performance Monitor!

I found that BeyondExec did that to our CC3 server after we upgraded to 2003. Also, it would be worth speaking to Support about sending them some hardware logs (it is an add-on to Event Master) as we did that here and it identified a faulty case fan.

Do you use RM Auditor?

That caused a similar issue here a number of years ago so I just removed it and never had any issues since.

If you don't want to remove it, you can schedule a restart of the RMC3IEngine service.

Also had a few problems courtesy of HP Printer drivers and DNS problems, the latter an after-effect of a long-removed Conficker infection.

Yes, now you say that I remember problems we had here ages ago which were to do with an HP Colour LaserJet 3600, or rather with the HP bloatware that came with it. Removing that and doing a more basic drivers-only install resolved it.
