Hi all,
Does anyone have a way to allow a student user (without admin rights) to install a scanner driver on a Windows XP PC?
The scanner in question is a Canon Scan LiDE 100 (USB) and we have a Server 2003 infrastructure.
I know it can be done using Server 2008 however we are a RM School so that’s out of the picture.
I’ve also had a shot at using Win Install LE and kicking that out to the PCs but with no luck.

Sorry, just in case you didn't check that first post listed: that's what both those posts are about. Simply get a dedicated PC (an old / ultra small Windows XP Home machine is just fine (do remember you will still need a (£3-ish) CAL if you plan to have it use your network)), plug in a cheap USB scanner, have the PC connect to a network drive and set up the scanning software so it scans straight to that drive. The PC doesn't even need a screen. For art, it might be worth spending a bit more on the scanner (£100 rather than £30) so you get something with decent colour reproduction.Quote:

I've the same problem but with a Hp Scanjet G2710. I've made a CC4 package that deploys OK but, as you've found, pupils can't just connect the scanner and go. You need to be an admin for that...
However, if anyone plugs in a Scanjet 3400c it works straight away.
I wonder what is the difference between drivers that come with XP and those that are subsequently added?
...and yes, we've tried the approach where you dedicate a machine, or two, to be the scanning PC. However, in the Art dept they have scissors and they cut the cable-ties and move the kit around and then moan that it doesn't work.

Can't non admin users install published installs via GPO?
If you can get an MSI of the scanner drivers you could publish it under their users GPO. (Providing you allow them to access add and remove) You may be able to configure elivated privages within the gpo?
You may be able to do something with client side extensions as well.
We're a little locked down on options being RM CC4 (Server 2003) and considering our current network instabilities I don't think the NM would go along with something like that (good idea though).Quote:

After that, it's just a case of deploying the MSI to workstations. It's very easy on CC3, no different from installing any other MSI, so I presume there is a similar procedure for CC4.
Have a go at creating the MSI, but if you get stuck, I could probably make one for you. Canon drivers are relatively easy to work with in my experience.

soz, I've never seen an RM network. I've only had second user accounts from pupils from other schools. Sounds annoying though. M$ plus RM problems (eeeeps)
