Symantec Backup Exec?
I am looking at moving away from ntbackup for our 4 windows servers, one with SQL running on it.
Cant anyone explain what exactly i need to buy as there seems to be so many different versions of this i'm going around and around in circles trying to work out just what i need to budget for.
Do i just need to buy 4 seperate copies or is there multipacks, then i guess there is a yearly fee as well... i seem to be convincing myself not to bother here
Well it all depends whats on the servers you want to backup.
For the backup server its self you will need the Backup Exec Server product.
For each other server you want to back files up from you'll need a Windows System Agent
For SQL and exchange you'll need an Agent for each of those too. If you have 2 SQL servers you only need 1 agent, likewise for exchange.
You don't need to buy support for these and you don't have to have any continuous annual maintenance fees, but obviously you won't have any access to updates etc.
Ok so i can get away with 1 copy of backup exec server then buy 4 client licenses for the others. That makes more sense money wise and in my confused head.
Don't forget the SQL agent license.

I guess a Backup of AD would be nice to have if everything went 'pop'.
Not sure if anyone knows how good it is though....
If you intend to backup to disk you would be far better off to consider Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR).
This is available on Academic License for about £2,000
The starter pack includes a license for 5 servers.
It also includes the Granular Restore option which allows recovery of individual Exchange objects (emails, contacts etc) and SQL/Sharepoint objects.
There is a central web management console included but this needs to be installed on a server and to be honest you can manage any server from any other server!
Yes it is more expensive but look at the advantages,
1. No backup window all data is protected real time.
2. Backup to remote devices including FTP
3. P2V V2P conversion direct to VMware or MSVHD formats
4. Restore to different hardware
5. User Self Service Recovery - No need for MS Shadow Copy Client
A complete backup and DR Solution in one package.
Try it free for 60 days.
Similar products are available from Acronis etc...
