One of our domain users has accidentally deleted several items from a pen drive - will it be possible to recover these items? I have tried looking the 'RECYCLER' folder, within the user's home drive, but all it shows are items within my own Recycle Bin. Any ideas?
download UltimateBootCD and use photorec which you will find in HDD>PartitionMagic
There are plenty of free "Windows" tools but have a 1GB limit

So run this on the file server, or directly against the pen drive?
Boot a computer of the CD ( it's a gr8 CD to have in your "WonderfulDisks" collection )
Go to the HDD menu and run partition magic.
It will boot a Linux GUI.
On there you will find a menu item for photorec. make sure the USB pen is plugged in and photorec should guide you through the recovery steps ( although it is text based. )
As I say, there a windows based ones Free Data Recovery Software, Backup Software, Partition Manager and System Cleaner Freeware in Windows/Linux/Mac - EaseUS Official Site do one but it costs money for anything over 1GB .

I use reclaime, which costs about £60 but is an absolute godsend. I use it at least twice a week!
the UBCD for windows is pretty awesome. you can boot into an XP environment off of the cd and have a fair amount of apps. or you can just put the cd in while in windows on your hard disc. the CD has an autorun.inf that changes your start menu and you can run the apps included on the disc without having to install them.
Photorec and testdisk are really good.. Recova is another good one which is also on the disc.
but you can also just download those online as well. you don't need the ubcd4windows
generally when just trying to get data off of a hdd I will use knoppix because it boots fast than the UBCD4Win
I think the best way to recover lost data is to use data recovery software
Testdisk has a undelete function. You can also create a dd image and mount with osfmount to protect original pen drive.
Recuva - free and easy :)
I have used Testdisk (Photorec), Recuva, pci_filerecovery, Getdataback for NTFS, and a few others...
I'll +1 for Photorec takes a bit longer and was all dos box style interface stuff but seemed the most thorough and got the best results in the usability of the recovered files.
