Have you tried running: "regsvr32 wuaueng.dll" from CMD? Can you access the DB if you install SQL Management Studio Express?

Management server does not recognise the local server as an SQL server.

WSUS "should" install MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE as part of the install, but throws up the above error still.

It also seems to think there is an old WSUS database installed somewhere...... grrrr

    msiexec /x {CEB5780F-1A70-44A9-850F-DE6C4F6AA8FB} callerid=ocsetup.exe
Also fails when removing the internal database. Going to try reinstalling from a fresh msi.

Edit - the fresh MSI worked, it removed without errors and WSUS now gets a bit further into the install.

    The specific error is -

An instance with the same name is already installed on this computer
And the error from the SQL Management Studio -

Urgh, somehow the SQL instance reg keys that were previously deleted (MICROSOFT##SSEE) got back in to the registry, perhaps because of the multiple reinstall attempts.

Anyway, this seems to be working now, I hope my solution will help someone else
