WSUS not working on some pcs

Hi,
WSUS is not working on some pcs (mainly W7) but some XP also.

These missing computers do not register themselves in WSUS.

I have tried
Code:
reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate /v AccountDomainSid /f
reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate /v PingID /f
reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Win dowsUpdate /v SusClientId /f
cls
@echo Triggering detection after resetting WSUS client identity
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
and
Code:
IF EXIST ("$tchpath\reglimit.tch")=0
if InStr(@PRODUCTTYPE, "Windows 7") OR InStr(@PRODUCTTYPE, "Windows Vista")
SHELL '%comspec% /c REG ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control" /v "RegistrySizeLimit" /t REG_DWORD /d "4294967295" /f > NUL'
endif
Copy ("$launchpath\generic.tch") ("$tchpath\reglimit.tch") /H
endif
I have also installed the latest WindowsUpdateAgent.

Any advice

Hi

Can you describe your environment?

Which version of WSUS?
Core OS and SP Level?
Client machines including SP Level?
Using GPO's?
Using Upstream/Downstream WSUS?

Thanks
Sukh

Server 2003 (sp2)
WSUS v3.2.7600.226 (sp2)
XP sp3
win7
Not using gpo to control wsus apart from a gpo to get the update service to pick up from local server and not ms. Computers are assigned within WSUS.
No upstream/downstream servers.

WSUS is running fine on about 60% of the computers.

Hi

Can you find a problem machine and run wuauclt.exe /detectnow and locate the WindowsUpdate.log file and post here or PM me?

Thanks

Sounds like a SID issue to me... I remember years ago I had the same issue and I found out the machines had the same SID (where built from ghost and not sysprep'ed)

Some of the machines came from Stone and now I think about it Stone do clone before sending out to schools. I will see which other machines are causing an issue tomorrow.

The odd computer I've had which refuses to get updates I've had great success in tracking down the problem by reinstalling the Windows Update Agent from How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer

If it says it's already installed, run it with the switch /wuforce and it'll force the install over the top. If it fails for any reason atleast it will give you one (the common one I've had is the Windows Installer being out of date).

After it's install, reboot and then run a wuauclt /detectnow and you should be off (has sometimes still taken 20 mins or so to pick up updates properly)

We've had the same issue with our systems - that was a SID issue because they had been ghosted without being sysprepped first.

Apparently, WSUS still works with those machines, it's just that WSUS Console only gets one entry per SID - so if multiple machines have the same SID, only one of them will appear in the list.

OK that probably sorts out the xp machines but I thought (probably wrong) that Win7 used a new sid system based on user sids. Also newsid will not work on win7. That would leave me with sysprep. Can sysprep run on a live machine without changing any user accounts/settings?

Hi

Looking at the log you have posted shows the client working. Many have mentioned duplicate SID's which may be the issue.

Can you identify this first by using HOW TO: Find and Clean Up Duplicate Security Identifiers with Ntdsutil in Windows Server 2003

Then we need to create a new sid for those duplicate and then finally run

Delete Duplicate SUS Client IDs.

Thanks

When I run the ntdsutil with instruction in above link the dupsid.log file comes back empty.

Hi

Can you post the exact command as you have typed it, maybe save the contents of the cmd window.

To confirm/rule out the duplicate SID, can you continue with the steps ignoring NTDSUTIL command.

Thanks

Hello sukh,
As requested I have pm you the cmd output window.

The code on the 'Delete Duplicate SUS Client IDs' page is the same as the code I have used in my first post, although I did run this one just in case.

Any other ideas?
