Hi, could do with some help here please! First day back and we have no internet on out student network.
I can browse using IP address but not domain name.
We use a CA Gateway which is a sideways content filter for net access and this connects with another server that has 'Routing and Remote Access' enabled and is connected to the Internet.
DNS passed the simple query but failed the recursive test.
Internally it can resolve names.
Using NSLOOKUP it can identfy the server running DNS but to websites we get a request timed out message.
It all started Friday when we could do google searches for anything but not get to the sites suggester.
Help please..
Thanks in advance
Mark

If an NSlookup using the internal DNS servers can't get external IPs for websites then along with being able to browse via IPs this is almost certainly the cause.
I would check the fowarders in the DNS server config are pointing to your ISPs DNS servers and also check that your DNS server can actually connect to them. You should be able to do a nslookup from the DNS server on the isp server by using "nslookup www.somesite.com ISPdnsIP".
If that does not work look at your firewall rules to make sure your DNS servers are allowed to access DNS on the ISP server directly.
Cheers, I am looking now. On our server connected the the Internet I changed the DNS address to our providors forwarder and it worked fine, no problem.
'nslookup www.somesite.com ISPdnsIP' gave me DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds.
