This would be the easiest way:
Exchangepedia Blog: HOW TO: Reconnect a mailbox to another user
I'd probably test it first on a test user to make sure that it works as advertised on your system.
I have a user who has (for a number of reasons) had to have their account completely recreated. I want them to keep the same email address and mailbox though. For examples sake, their old account was jsmith and the new one is jsmith1. I know I could just keep the jsmith account and give jsmith1 access rights on the mailbox but I would prefer to delete the jsmith account and then rename jsmith1 to jsmith and then attach the mailbox (so the user still has the same username they used to).
When I go to delete an account from Active Directory it gives me the option to "mark the selected exchange mailbox for deletion" but this is ticked and greyed out and I can't untick it.
I'm on Server 2003 and Exchange 2003 by the way.
Can anyone help me with this please? Many thanks in advance.

Cheers for this, I'll give it a try.
