The new substitute terminology upon which the Softies have decided is -- drum roll -- "Windows 8," according to my sources.
Here's the official guidance, my sources say: Anything currently/formerly known as a "Metro-Style application" (with or without a hyphen) will now be known officially as a "Windows 8 application." References to the "Metro user interface" will now be replaced by "Windows 8 user interface." And instead of saying "Metro design," the Softies and those adhering to their official guidelines will be using the words "Windows 8 design."
An obvious choice that will cause no confusion whatsoever.

9th August 2012, 09:19 PM #3 I reckon Microsoft would call them Windows 9 apps in Windows 9. Everyone else will simply refer to them as apps.
I suppose "apps" are programs that run in the Metro environment and "programs" are applications that run on the old-style desktop.

1st November 2012, 01:58 AM #6 Microsoft has finally decided on a new name. Metro apps are called Windows Store apps.
It's a bit shorter and easier to say and much more likely to catch on, though most people will probably still just refer to the Windows Store apps as "apps" due to the ubiquitous that term has come to be.

1st November 2012, 09:26 AM #7 If they wanted people to use it they should have come up with it earlier, cutting its recognition off at the knees now is just stupid and the exact kind of behaviour you'd expect from the 'marketing'/internal sabotage department at Microsoft.

1st November 2012, 09:32 AM #8 Nah, not catchy enough. That'd be like Apple calling all their stuff 'iTunes Apps'. Do they actually have marketing people at that company?
