2000 was a server OS your honour! And any attempts to install it as a workstation OS were crimes against god, clearly, lesser only than the crime of county council laptops round here still running it.

7th February 2012, 10:49 AM #124 Still not getting it. Why would you want your entire screen to be taken over to do a search? Spotlight in OS X has a search box which does all that sorta stuff, but your screen stays normal, as does Windows Vista/7, as does Linux (through various packages), as does my XP system with a program installed.
I just don't get it still.
Why do we want a single interface type across touchscreen devices and normal desktops? You wouldn't put a steering wheel on a bicycle, so why a touchscreen interface on a desktop?

Very well said!
Its because microsoft want to force people to write apps for their doomed tablet and mobile OS, that's the only reason I can think of.

But the screen is green (not purple) and the icons are on the right (not the left), so it's not like Unity / Gnome 3 at all.

I violently agree.
The way the screens flick back and for looks like a schizophrenic operating system.
I do hope some consistency is planned.

2000 Pro was a client OS. I had it installed on my home computer, because it was far better than the alternative (Windows ME).

I’m going to hold full judgement until I have tried it out properly but from what I have seen so far its pretty good, not amazing but good. I get the appeal of the new UI but I just feel as if I have seen it all before. Its so heavily app- focused which is great for everyday use but not so good if you want a bit more from your OS. Seems sort of like the windows 7 sidebar gadgets have just been redrawn and plopped into the center of the screen. They were handy at first but then i started to hate them and hid them all so I probably wont like the UI boxes either. I am glad to see they finally did something visually differentthough. But for me personally the design is really not to my taste. It seems to be aimed at teenage girls but if the level of customisation is good enough to make it slicker then I can see myself using it...maybe.

But that's what you get when you look behind the curtain, eh Toto?
