Well I've spent around a week with Windows 8 and I'm pretty much ready to give up on it. Fair enough if MS had taken a bold step and created a new OS, but this is a patched/botched up copy of Windows 7 with a clumsy interface stuck on top. Everything runs in Windows 7 but you're forced to pretend its new by fighting around the metro interface. From an admins point of view its awful - I've yet to see any useful addition unless you're on a tablet.

Plus it seems to just have fundamental flaws. Like it won't install RSAT for Windows 8 (on mine anyway - its been sat 'preparing the installtion' for 30 minutes and thats the 5th attempt!) and ignores a lot of group policy settings. Windows 7 had plenty of issues but I could see the point of the changes from XP. This is just change for changes sake - and obviously a conscious descision from MS to take an even bigger step away from corporate and education users - can you honestly imagine businesses using Win8?

37 of 37 here as well.

Personally I dislike all this Metro stuff just because it is still botched and half-@rsed. I love how Windows Phone works (my wife has the Lumia 800), but on my daughter's Surface, WinRT is a pain. Maybe my view is distorted because if I'm using it, it's because it's broken, but using (effectively) the Win7 desktop on a 10.6" screen with your finger is. Not. Fun.

Server 2012 is also horrible. Even in desktop mode, sometimes you will select one window and it will arbitrarily hide all others. In Windows. WTH.

In the general settings you can adjust how many posts are displayed per page, mine is set to 'forum default'

It's the inconsistency that's really killing the product - with 8 you often have that feeling of "what interface am I going to get now?"

Ironically despite rushing Win8 to market to compete with the iPad the hardware available isn't up to scratch for the OS (imo) so in 20:20 hindsight MS really could've waited another couple of months and had some decent tablets (including Surface Pro) sorted as well as a while longer to sort out the UI issues. Whether they'll get a 2nd chance with an SP1 re-release with more suitable hardware is debatable, the market may have given up and moved on by then which could really spell trouble for Microsoft.

Has anyon actually got the RSAT tools to work in 8? I downloaded the package and installed it with no errors, but nothing appears anywhere on the system, and cannot be found in the Windows features list. Not a good start.

you have to install the en-us language pack (or whatever its called) i believe as it dosent recognise en-gb as a language

Exactly right - install en-us language pack and then re-run installer. It will install ok then.

Do people not read the system requirements any more? Microsoft mentions it only supports 'en-US' underneath the download links.

Still, that's a fairly stupid limitation that has never existed before, and even if they couldn't be bothered to get it working with the essentially-identical en-gb, I would have expected the installer to at least pick up on the lack of en-us and download/install the relevant files as part of its installation.

If they want to take Apple on (god only knows why), they need to be making things more useable and straightforwards, not going backwards
