That's the point though - I am using a desktop, so I don't want a UI better suited to a touch screen device! I've said all along it'd be great on a touch screen, but I and the vast majority of the rest of the computer using world still use a mouse, and the humble mouse and Windows 8 do not mix.

I hated having to search for everything when Ubuntu did it months back and I hate it now in Windows 8 - I can't speak for the Apple crowd. My memory is awful, but I can usually find what I'm looking for in the start menu as I'm prompted to remember when I actually see the name of the program I'm looking for - having to search lends me no such prompt.

It's not so bad on a laptop with one screen, the core of W8 is superior for efficiency and speed but UI wise W7 is better on multiple screens, you can use the W8 start menu replacements but you loose a bunch of the actual desktop functionality with a base install. That is why we are not rushing it out to desktops. Any tablets we have however are being W8ted ASAP as it is really good for that. They are both fine as OSs, uniformity is a false economy and the benefits of W8 on tablets outweight the 'fun' of 'teaching' staff the differences between the two.

W8 does prompt you with the names too, Windows Key then start typing, it will happily bring up a list of programs that match.

Classic Shell does work OK. I think MS should give you the option to put the start buttom in.
