Hi Guys
Sorry if this has already been covered before...
Those of you who have staff personal devices that they can take home what licensing do you use for them KMS or MAK?
Thanks

Gotta be KMS. Why not? It only requires a check in every 180 days, and if staff aren't bringing them in to school that often, I'd be questioning why. Not to mention, doing so means the school has no oversight over the data protection aspects of them being used - is the anti-virus up to date? Have they installed a tonne of spyware? Who knows if they don't bring them in.
Personally, I'd like it if I could change it down to 60 days. It'd mean they have enough time to use it at home during summer holidays, but means they have to bring it in to school at least 6 times a year to force updates etc...
I'd also not refer to the devices as 'personal devices' as that implies that they are staff members to do with what they please.
KMS, same as any other school device, for the reasons @localzuk mentions. If they're hitting that 180 day timeout, it's a sign I don't need to refresh the laptop because they're not using the thing.
Agree, KMS. We do in fact have a member of staff who hit the 180 day limit and never even noticed because they didn't turn the laptop on for 8 months. I called it in for "servicing". They're not getting it back.
Yup everything our end is KMS. No requirement for MAK, thats just one more thing for us to learn :p
Another vote for KMS, we use it for Office and Windows. As withthe other posters, 180days is more than enough.

KMS for sure. Though be prepared for the "Oh why haven't you connected the laptop to the network for MS and AV updates as per the laptop AUP?" conversation :)
Have had that here too, responded by winding the time down in KMS to require it once every two months as above, enough for holidays but not for simply pilfering the thing. We also had a staff member who wiped the image and reinstalled it to a personal copy, they got talked to and their laptop was locked down fully, bios and bootmedia lockouts, native drivelocking, bitlocker and all. The rest of the staff just need bitlocker to keep the data safe and can be relied upon not to stuff the laptop over fully themselves.
slmgr.vbs -sri and -sai on the KMS server allow you to mess with the activation intervals.
Thanks everyone, for some reason I had it in my head that they had to checkin every 30 days which would of caused problems over the summer holiday...
KMS - easy as anything to manage :)
Never had anyone hit the 180 days but then again our staff have only their notebook for use, we have site wide Wi-Fi to make sure its network connected and even for the 1 staff member who works from a far he just hooks up onto the VPN :)
Strangely enough, mak here, as staff don't bring their laptops in. As we are updating the aup at the moment, the laptops will be changed to Kms as they are collected and re-imaged.
