Re: the logs files in post #53. There seem to be rather a lot of corrupt files. If you have problems in the future, I would definitely recommend using the factory reset option.[/QUOTE]
I'm a bit scared to do the factory reset now that the original problem is fixed although that was my next step. Could doing a factory reset cause more harm than good or is that impossible?
KB2289942 simply unchecks the option labelled 'Use a proxy server for your LAN' (under LAN Settings on the Connections tab) and KB923737 completely resets your Internet Explorer settings.

As long as the recovery partition hasn't been corrupted too, then you should be fine. As @plexer and @mac_shinobi mentioned above, it would be a good idea to backup any data you have saved on your netbook (e.g. in the documents/pictures folders) and drivers (which are sometimes saved in a folder called Drivers on your C: drive). You will also need to re-install any applications you installed yourself since these will be deleted.

Thanks. Yes, I think I will leave it for now. I have backed up his documents - not a lot as he has only been using it for school work for 6 months and will get the Drivers off if I can find them.
Then send him back to school with it and see how he gets on.
Enormous thanks for all your help.
Would recommend some sort of online backup - look at mozy and backblaze. If schoolwork is on there it's worht a few quid for peace of mind.
Slightly off-topic, but do you know if Mozy have fixed the issue described here? I stopped using Mozy after this happened to me. :(
