Windows 7 Start Menu Redirection

Hi Everyone - further to my last post, I am still not having success with Windows 7 Start Menu Redirection ! on Windows 7 Professional clients.

We run Windows 2008 r2 Servers abeilt running Windows 2003 functional level, we have majority of Windows XP clients all working fine. Have recently been testing Windows 7 for a proposed rollout this August. Our shared Start Menu is

\\server\start$

the GPO that deals with it redirects the desktop etc and student home folder. However on Windows 7 we still get [empty] on the programs menu. If I check the event viewer on the machine I get no errors see attachment

I have got start menu redirection working on a seperate server with Windows 7 but within school it having none of it.

If anyone has got any further thoughts or pointers I would be very grateful !

I have seen a couple of people with this but i dont know a fix, i didnt chase it up or anything.

I would be interested to know how to resolve this.

Your GPO is configured correctly
Howeverm under the \\server\start$ share do you have a folder called "Programs"?
Without this - you wont see anything in the redirected start menu..

Hi yes we do have a 'programs' folder in the share and within that the start menu items

Are you running SP1 on your workstations? I vaguely remember this being mentioned as a bug that was fixed in SP1. I used to have this problem but not any more and my Windows 7 machines are running SP1.

I've got 2K8 R2 servers and a mix of 7 (not SP1 yet) and Xp SP3 machines and my folder redirection works fine. Admitidly to a local source but still fine.

One thing I notice your message says you redirect to \\server\start$ but the message log (image) says it is re-directed to \\server\start\

Does the event log knock of the $ for some reason or is there a typo? Though that wouldn't explain why your other machines still worked.

Well spotted. In the setting in group policy it might be worth specifying it as

\\server\start$\

rather than

\\server\start$

If you take a look on my blog, I talked about this PITA of a bug. There was a dodgy Windows Update which broke folder redirection. The way to fix it was to delete a few registry entries.

Issue 2: Folder Redirection

If you get a blank desktop or start menu (or both) but you know your folder redirection is working/set up properly... run the following. It clears out the KnownFolders section of the registry which have got broken.

Copy it into a notepad but you need this :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

At the top. Save the file as .reg then double click to merge it into the registry .....

I am having this issue now on a Server 2008 R2 terminal server i did the reg edits and it didnt work :(

@TheScarfedOne. Please use CODE tags for scripts etc. vBulletin inserts random spaces otherwise. :(

That is vb script code not a registry import. To use it paste the contents into a text file and name it
