My main XP machine died last night so I've spent a few hours installing and configuring Windows 7. Thought I would write down a few things for future reference.
Installing the Exchange 2003 management tools
These don't work normally in windows 7, but there is a nice hack here:
Windows 7 RC1 Exchange Admin and RSAT - Page 2 - Windows 7 Forums
Transfering Firefox favorites and user/passwords
Copy from C:\Windows.old\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxx.default\
Making MSN messenger minimize to the system tray
Right click on C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe and set compatibility mode to "Vista". It should now minimize to the tray fine.
Use the mess.be patch here to get rid of the adds MessPatch Light: quick.basic.universal
Turn off UAC
Disable User Account Control (UAC) the Easy Way on Win 7 or Vista :: the How-To Geek
Hopefully this might be helpfull to some people. Now the fun really starts transfering my mysql databases!!
Installing PHP on IIS 7
What a nightmare, thats 3hrs of my life wasted!!
Well finally got it going. Basically do it manually by downloading the zip file because the installer does not work on windows 7. Make sure you create a new "add script" handler mapping for php using the php5isapi. FastCGI seems to have a lot of problems for some reason and I never found a solution. Also make sure the php path is in your environment variables and php.ini is in c:\windows as well as c:\php
MySQL should install fine with the installer but it does copy stuff to program data which confused me for a while when transfering raw databases.
