Im Converted
After going from Vista back to XP in May 08 after giving Vista 6 months, I started using Ubuntu as my main OS in about May this year. Ive been using the RC for about a month now, and I must admit, I'm liking it a lot, and don't find myself in Ubuntu all that much.
All the stuff I do on my laptop is pretty much platform independent - I don't play games or anything so its literally just browsing/mail/ssh/rdp/media etc. One thing I will admit to is firing up a VM whenever in ubuntu and having to word process. Open office spreadsheets were fine, but IMO nothing could compete with word.
Anyway, managed to get given a free copy of 7 Pro RTM, but unfortunately cant go from this Ultimate RC to the 7 Pro, so will hold off doing a complete re-install until I am in a position to do a full backup etc.
This is the first time Ive run a 64bit OS on this laptop too, although Im still not really sure what the difference is ;p
Theres only a couple of devices that dont work, but Ive found a thread on notebookreview.com with ppl with the same model laptop, so hopfully will have it working all properly soon :)

Im rather happy with the RC, use it on my main home PC, Direct X 10.1 is nice for all ma gamez. It is rather stable and i havent had any problems with hardware etc... I also use it on my office pc, it joined the server 2k3 domain no problems, although we dont have any GPOs in the office and we are all admins so i havent seen how it locks donw yet.
I use Linux on all my other personal machines, server uses arch (its nice having a server that needs ~250mb of RAM to function at top speed, gives my a 1.75GB Cache :D), my netbook runs fedora, it came with XP but the idea of windows on a netbook hurt too much so i never even booted it up

I have the full RTM running at home and the KMS version running in the school curriculum PCs. Works a treat, locks down well with the GPOs via Server 2008 R2 :D

Im not sure if i mentioned it in my original post, but the main reason for my jumping ship is the battery usage difference. I get 8+ hours from windows 7 (wifi connection + minimum brightness) compared to about 5 hours with ubuntu with the same settings. I never really checked in XP to be honest, so it could just be a windows thing rather than a 7 thing.
One thing I have noticed is that my fan seems to be on a lot more than before... but that could just be coz Sydney is pretty hot :P
