Can 32 bit and 64 bit JAVA co-exist on a Windows 7 64bit PC?

The reason I ask is that our Head of IT wants me to install some software called ReplicatorG to all the IT suites.

I've tested the install and it seems to install OK, but it won't run.

Googled the issue and came up with this website:

If you are using a Windows 7 64-bit machine, you cannot be using a 64 bit version of Java. You need to install the 32 bit version of Java otherwise RepG will not open, although the process is active in the task manager.

I installed JAVA by on the PC's initially by just going to the JAVA website....

Yes, they can coexist happily.

You'll find that Java updates prompted for from the updater however, only seem to apply to the 32-Bit version!

We have both installed due to compatibility issues.

I used to run both side by side in my base image without issue. Eventually I pulled out the 64bit version though and nobody has missed it. Way too much of a PITA to update one install of Java, let alone two.

We run both due to chrome on the students laptops. Chrome needs 32bit java but they are running 64bit Windows 7.

Also just FYI i being using this script for years. It will remove any version of Java from the computer. It is good to use when deploying a new version of java with out leaving behind the old version. Attach is the File.

That's not right @Spectoron. I only have 64 bit Java and Chrome is fine.

From what i can tell it does. I got my install at (Chrome Browser for Education) And installed on the student and teacher laptops. At first it seem to work great then all of a sudden Chrome keeps saying to install java even when the 64bit is up to date and works fine in IE. Once I installed the 32bit it works just fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you only need x64 if you're using x64 browsers? I only ever install the x86 JRE round here (on Win7 x64) and we've had no problems.

Well, apart from them managing to squeeze half a dozen updates into a calendar month. Honest to god, every time I have checked the Java website since the first 0-day exploit earlier this year, there's been two increments in the version. I only just managed to get it all up to date over half term and by yesterday afternoon, ECDL tests were all complaining that the Java plug in was out of date :tsk:
