Mouse and Keyboard age to install

Hi Guys,

I'm having big problems with USB keyboards and mice. When the machine boots and gets to the login screen it is not a gurantee that the keyboard and mouse will work. I'm running Windows 7 across all machines. Sometimes an unplug and plug back in will get it to work but other times it is taking 2-3mins to find and install the drivers.

Pupils are reaching to the back of the machine to unplug them which is something I don't want. I can go in to a classroom and find a few mice or keyboards plugged in to the front of the machine or completely unplugged.

I have tried different keyboards and mice but it seems to make no difference. Even an MS mouse and keyboard can take a while to install.

I've noticed that when you plug them in first time they can take a while to install as it tries to go off to Windows Update to pull the latest drivers down (which it cant get to) so it'll wait for a time out before continuing.

Unplugging the network (if installing mouse) or clicking on the Skip text in the installation window will speed it up.

Shouldnt be doing it on every boot though - are you using deep freeze or similar?

I've had this before. BIOS update fixed it. Was on a custom gaming rig mind.

I am using fog to image my machines.

Pulling the network cable out is not an option for the pupils - Impero doesn't like it :-)

I will look into the BOIS version to see if there is an update.

I notice it occasionally here as well on our Windows 7 machines, although It's not the same model etc that it effects - it's just a bit random.

I didn't have this enabled so going to give it a try:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communication Management\Internet Communication settings.

turn off Windows Update device driver searching - ENABLED

Rob998's solution worked for us to. Another key was as follows;

gpedit.msc (Local Group Policy Editor) "Computer configuration\Administrative Templates\Driver Installation\Turn off Windows Update device driver search prompt" edited and now enabled.

We had the exact same issue. Windows would look at Windows Update for drivers before checking its own local driver cache. The problem is we use authenticated web proxies to get outside and when Windows is at a login screen it doesn't have proxy settings since the GPO that assigns said proxies is under the user configuration. Rather than disabling the searching of Windows Update altogether I changed the search order and moved it to the bottom. This way it won't get in the way of plugging in keyboards and mice when sitting at a login screen, but it'll still work for when a user is logged in and plugs in an oddball printer that the system doesn't have local drivers for.
