Analysis of logon times - how to speed it up...

    Logon time analysis

Tested using a Windows 7 64bit computer in an MSI Testing OU with Block Inheritance ticked, therefore ruling out any Group Policy Issues.

Moved a Pupil test logon "4480" to the same OU.

Initial Logon time to desktop with no egg-timer = 40 seconds.

Repeated with same user, logon time to desktop with no egg-timer = 4 seconds.

On checking C:\users\4480 I find itís 24.3 Mb

    Further analysis shows that:
    C:\Users\4480\AppData\Local\Microsoft\
Is built up as shown below:

Folder Number of files Space used
    ================= =============== ==========
    Credentials 0 0 MB
    Current Folder 0 0 MB
    Feeds 3 0.06 MB
    Feeds Cache 8 0.04 MB
    Internet Explorer 3 0.11 MB
    Media Player 14 2 MB
    Office 0 0 MB
    Windows 26 4 MB
    Windows Mail 62 15 MB
    Windows Media 2 0.02 MB
    Windows Sidebar 1 0.01 MB
    ----------------- --------------- ----------
    TOTAL 119 20 MB

How can I stop this creation of unnecessary data and speed up logon times for first use.

    After reading here:
Default mandatory profile is slow to logon - is this normal?

    I deleted the keys:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}]
    "IsInstalled"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}]
    "IsInstalled"=dword:00000000

This reduced the initial logon down to 34 seconds.

    C:\Users\4480\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Expl orer\
is now the largest local folder for user 4480, the contents being:

    thumbcache_256.db 1 MB
    thumbcache_32.db 1 MB
    thumbcache_96.db 1 MB
    ExplorerStartupLog.etl 0.05 MB
    ExplorerStartupLog_RunOnce.etl 0.02 MB
    thumbcache_idx.db 0.01 MB
    thumbcache_1024.db 0.01 MB
    thumbcache_sr.db 0.01 MB

What else could I do to speed up the initial logon?

    Thanks

If you want a non-reg hack way of disabling Windows Mail, it can be achieved through group policy (CPU Config - Admin Templates - Windows Components - Windows Mail - Turn off windows mail application - enabled)

Otherwise it would be worth looking at the default profile on your machine and ensuring that it is as clean as possible.

From my own experience, I know that Browser Customization tends to take a fair while to run through...

    Thanks

Anyone else know which of the above can be deleted to speed up logon times and which might be essential to proper operation?

We've got logon times reduced from 80 seconds to 40 seconds by disabling the following three reg keys:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components]

    {7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02} (Address book)
    {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} (WinMail)
    {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4340} (Windows Desktop Update)

Will do some testing to see if any of these have broken anything....early indicators suggest NOT!

Does this have the same effect as the reg hack? Common sense would suggest it should stop the auto database creation but with MS these days I'm not that trusting

If I could speed up the HP UPD when mapping via GPP that would help as well, takes about 20 seconds which judging by the disk activity seems to be the driver copying \ installing every time (?) but would need to dig deeper to see the exact behaviour of it

For machines with guest accounts that we set to auto logon I have a requirement from powered off > usable desktop in 1min 30sec and I'm hitting it at the moment although 1min would be great

Broke libraries for me when I tried that during my initial Windows 7 testing. Login, hit start and go to documents. Wait... 30+ seconds for it to appear.

(Also Winmail has nothing to do with "Windows mail", i.e the email client. It's something to do with indexing as best I can tell)

    Thanks will investigate further...

I remove the libraries feature from our standard build anyway...

Doesn't happen to me on my test machines?

If you Google HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C the reg keys refers to Outlook Express in the dim and distant past which suggests it is actually Windows Mail. Seems to work OK for this guy...

Can you elaborate how you disabled these? Did you just modify their "IsInstalled"=dword:00000001" to 0? How about the "StubPath"?

I have that GPO enabled and a quick inspection suggests that none of the users whose profile was created since enabling it have the Windows Mail folder. However, users who pre-date that setting get the folder created locally even when logging on to a new computer.
