    kb2607576 and redirected start menu

    Hi all,

Since installing update kb2607576 "A Jump List that contains more than 999 items is not displayed in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2" our redirected start menu has stopped working.

When running a gpupdate we get "the following warnings where encountered: the group policy client side extension folder redirection was unable to apply one or more settings etc etc".

Never been getting this message up until this update.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

If you uninstall this update, does it restore functionality back to normal?

The article is dated October 31st 2011, so this has literally been released. Was it installed from WSUS, Microsoft Update or manually?

I'm not quite sure what Microsoft mean by a 'jump list', I'll have to have a look at a 7 workstation later.

its where you right click on say explorer in the task bar and can see user defined/auto added folders

my read would be having 999 items on the right click list so for explorer 999 frequent/pinned locations

i do know the jumplists on my pc/laptop at home sometimes decide to wipe themselves for no obvious reason

I've had a look on several 7 workstations and they're all using the default of 10. Why you'd want 999 I'll never know, 10 should be more than enough!

I also found the following GPOs:

User Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar

    - Do not allow pinning items in Jump Lists

    - Do not display or track items in Jump Lists from remote locations

In GPP, you can specify the number of items on the Start Menu, but not Jump Lists (as far as I can see).

Michael, thanks but this is not my point. My point was that the KB has stopped my redirected start menu from working.

    Thanks

Just to clarify, what I was looking for was whether or not there was a GPO or GPP which could help resolve your problem.

Have you tried posting the problem on Microsoft's own forums?

Edit: I can confirm KB2607576 was installed on 26th October on my workstation and although I redirect both Start Menu and Desktop, I leave the Start Menu blank and only populate the Desktop with shortcuts.

As a small test, I just copied some shortcuts over to the Start Menu folder and it is working correctly.

Think you may like me! Had exactly the same and only noticed it last Monday. Was only effecting new user profiles at mine.
Luckily managed to track it don to this update as well.

After a great deal of messing around I found that even thou we have libraries disabled (expect you may have too) there are some folders reg keys left in the registry. If these keys are removed everything returns to normal. Reg keys to delete are:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{2112AB0A-C86A-4ffe-A368-0DE96E47012E}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{2112AB0A-C86A-4ffe-A368-0DE96E47012E}\PropertyBag]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{491E922F-5643-4af4-A7EB-4E7A138D8174}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{491E922F-5643-4af4-A7EB-4E7A138D8174}\PropertyBag]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{7b0db17d-9cd2-4a93-9733-46cc89022e7c}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{7b0db17d-9cd2-4a93-9733-46cc89022e7c}\PropertyBag]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{A302545D-DEFF-464b-ABE8-61C8648D939B}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{A302545D-DEFF-464b-ABE8-61C8648D939B}\PropertyBag]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{A990AE9F-A03B-4e80-94BC-9912D7504104}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{A990AE9F-A03B-4e80-94BC-9912D7504104}\PropertyBag]

Once removed all works - I backed them up on one machine first and then used Group Policy preferences to delete these keys on all machines. Dirty but works!

    Hope this fixes and helps.

    Mat

That may explain things as I have Libraries enabled on my networks.

Im not seeing this issue - and I do also use start and desktop redirection to local created folders.

The libraries issue with folder redirection is in the stickies thread already as a known issue - and it doesnt specifically relate to this update.

I dont think this is the same as the libraries issue on the stickies thread. In the end for months everything was fine and then suddently for new users Folder and Start menu redirection just broke. I noticed one machine was OK and on closer inspection it hadnt installed its updates from WSUS. As soon as this update was installed it broke - so my conclusion was it was caused by the update.

Removing the update didnt fix BUT removing these registry keys has solved it.

One thing to remember from my experience is that it was all OK for existing users BUT for any new users with no initial profile it didnt redirect. May be worth checking a new user if you have installed this update just to check all is ok.

mbrunt - be good if you could confirm if this fix does work for you as I expect a few others may experience this.

    Cheers

These keys are listed over on my blog from earlier in the year as being responsible for breaking folder redirection in various ways. The blog is here Windows 7 Updates which break things... - Blogs - EduGeek.net

You can use GPO preferences to remove these registry items or logon scripts

Thanks Matthew, I shall try this. I do indeed have libraries disabled. Also, the computer I am testing on is 64bit, will i need to remove any more reg keys?

Scarfedone, how comes you managed to blog about the fault BEFORE the update was sent out?
