We are currently in the process of deploying teacher laptops and have run in to a roaming profile issue. We currently use a mixture of folder redirection / roaming profiles throughout the school that works flawlessly.
The issue arises when the laptop is taken off-site; our group policies state to keep a cached copy of the roaming profile but it doesn’t appear to be working, along the way the local copy of the profile is removed. This is how it works:
1) Laptop has wireless coverage, logs on as user and correctly loads the user’s profile. Shutdown
2) Power on laptop, again laptop has wireless coverage and logs on correctly with user’s settings. Log off and disable wireless to simulate being off-site, reboot
3) Log on laptop as user with wireless off, everything appears fine, profile loads as normal with correct user settings, message is displayed that a locally stored copy of the profile has been loaded due to not being able to access the server copy (obviously because we are no longer on the network so this is correct, I want it to loaded from cache if off network). Log off; turn wireless back on and reboot.
4) Log back on to the machine, loads a temporary profile, even though we are now back on the school network. Under C:\Users the cached copy of the profile has mysteriously disappeared and the only way to get the machine to load the profile again is to delete the entry from the registry under HKLM\…\Windows NT\ProfileList
How can I resolve roaming profiles on mobile devices?
