    Windows7 Doesn't exist - it's a myth!

Here's the proof: (type winver at a command prompt)
    Windows 6.1.jpg

    So we had:
Windows NT4 (eee them were't days - who needs USB anyway?)
    Windows NT5 (Win2000)
    Windows NT5.1 (XP)
    Windows NT6 (Vista)

Now we've got Windows version 6.1 which is windows 7??

    Thank goodness it's Friday

It's to do with backwards compatibility rather than the actual version. A lot of software checks the version number, and will throw an error if it doesn't like what it finds. It's similar to the error that you can get with Flash 10 or above (some flash apps only check one number of the version and cry if they don't think it's recent enough).

So the actual version is Windows 7, but the internal version number appears as 6.1 so that lazy developers can get away with not having to do proper version checking. Look at the NT 5 and 5.1 version number change, but I don't think anyone would argue that XP and 2000 weren't different versions.

Version numbers are pretty arbitrary anyway. If people complain too much, I'm sure there'll be a hack along at some point to increase the version number to 7, or 8, or 42.

On a Technical level, there's not a lot of difference between Win7 and Vista, is there?
    It just works better.

I agree, nor is there much between 2000 and XP (5 and 5.1), XP just looks nicer

ah erm well <cough> you see...
    <hangs head in shame

actually, in my defence, I've been trying to get 7 working all morning, and compared to the looks-like-it's-drawn-on-see-through-acrylic-but-takes-half-your-processor-power-to-do-it Aero scheme, Fisher price is preferable you see...[/ClutchingAtStraws]
