    Remove Personal Folder Link

    Hi

I have searched for an answer to this, but cant find one so here goes.

We're looking at deploying (slowly) Win7 to some of our users who are requesting it on their new PC's. Currently the curriculum computers are deployed with XP & we currently have no plans to change this. As we only have 2003 Servers on domain, I am led to beleive some GP features will be denied to us.

I'm trying to hide the personal folder link in the start menu (The one that displays the users name) as this opens up a myriad of folders most of which cant be opened by the user (Due to an XP policy in place I suspect). If they click the Documents link on the Start Menu this takes them inside My Documents where they're familiar.

    Hope this makes sense.
    Paul

Yep - there is a GP to control this on. I havent got any 2003 servers left so cant guarantee this option will be available. The option is inside the User Config > Start Menu and Desktop area of GP. Will edit tomo with the exact path.

I used this policy to remove the personal folders from the start menu:

user configuration--preferences -- control panel -- start menu (start menu vista and later)

And cofigure not to have personal folders.

    I then set this option:

user configuraton -- administrative templates -- start menu and taskbar
prevent changes to task and start menu - enabled

This stopps the users from adding the personal folders back.

The problem, now it is very diffcult to see how is logged on to the computer, as before you could know it by the personal folders in the start menu that use to be the user's display name.

You will still have the personal folders availble from explorer, if you click on the left were the libraries are, in an empty space, and select "show all folders".

To remove from explorer try Personal Folder - how can you hide it?

    I haven't tried it yet.

I think Personal Folders are a waiste of space, only good for home users but in a domain with folders redirections.

if you dont have a 2008 server you can still edit win7 policies you just need to install win7 rsat on a NON sp1 win7 pc and edit them from there bit of a pain but works

Thanks - we only found out this was an issue recently - but the policies fixed it!
