Windows 7 not picking up policies

We are running 2003 server and a mix of Windows XP and Windows 7 PC's, the '7' PC'a are just not picking up the policies set. The story so far....

    I have downloaded RSAT,installed onto a windows 7 machine.
Created a WMI filter so the XP GPO's ignore '7' machines.
Moved the three suites into their own OU and created a GPO for this group.

Pupils can see the local hard drive, get to the control panel and it is a lottery if you can get to your home directory. They seem to ignore any policies set?

    Anyone had similar problems??

Is the policy applied to the students or on the OU the computers are in ?

From my personal opinion and experience if students are in an OU i would do it on this and it would apply to any machines that they use in the domain.

Yes, I have copied the policy store; I picked that up from another forum yesterday.
