So according to http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/upgrade_02.asp its easy but im failing at the first hurdle 
When I run the Windows Easy Transfer utility it says its not for 32bit OS' - can I use the vista back up and restore in win 7 or do I need the transfer utility?

You need to make sure that you're using the correct version, see here.
