Just found this
it seems there is an update available for any pre win7/R2 KMS servers which allows you to activate Win7/R2
What is the process to update an existing KMS host to support Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS clients?
For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be necessary to update the KMS host with a package containing the files supporting the expanded KMS client support. This package will be available through the Microsoft Download Center at Microsoft Download Center or through Windows Update and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Once applied, a KMS key that is designed to support Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 can be installed on the updated host and activated. Note that a KMS key supporting these new versions of Windows provides backward support for all previous versions of Volume License editions of Windows acting as KMS clients.
In the case of updating a Windows Server 2003 KMS host, all necessary files will be contained within the KMS 1.2 downloadable package, which will be available through the Microsoft Download Center at Microsoft Download Center at RTM. Once applied, a KMS key that is designed to support Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 can be installed on the updated host and activated. Note that a KMS key supporting these new versions of Windows provides backward support for all previous versions of Volume License editions of Windows acting as KMS clients.

Have these updates been released yet?
Not sure - lots of reference to it - but I cant seem to find the bloody thing!
Yeah I want to get my Win7 KMS key loaded on our 2k8 DC but it wont let me obviously.
There was something somewhere about it being adde to Win2k8 SP2 - but if thats true then its not working! cos my KMS server has had SP2 applied!!
I read somewhere that KMS 1.2, allowing Win7 activations, isn't due on the download centre until tomorrow, and via WSUS on the 25th August.
Edit: found it - http://blogs.technet.com/hied_west_b...s-updates.aspx
Ok. Thanks for that.
Hmm thats for Windows 2003 only though - no reference on the KB Article for a Windows 2008 update
from this link it looks like an update wont be available for Vista/2008 KMS Servers until August 25th!

KMS Update for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 is expected to be available via Windows Update and Windows Server Update Services. Service Pack 2 will need to be installed on the KMS host systems as a prerequisite. KB968912 will eventually cover this release, and it will be published on or before the release of this update.

Same here - still not able to activate Win7/R2 Running Windows 2008 SP2 x64 DataCentre
We get the following error: 0xC004F050
The codes are grouped.
I have a Class C code for 2008R2 Datacenter, this will activate (I think, only have servers activated) 2008R2, 2008, Windows 7 and Windows Vista with the one key.
You may be having issue trying to install a key that is not valid for the server you are trying it on.
Try the 2008R2 key instead and see if that works. Failing that try it on a Windows 7/Vista box with the license server
Not sure I follow DMcoy..
I have a 2008 DataCetre with SP2 and the new KMS Patch installed, and a 2008 R2 key direct from MVLS....
But receive the Invalid Key error as above..
Do I, infact need a Windows 2008 R2 DataCentre in order to use the R2 key? If so - what was the point of the KMS Patch for 03/08 ?
What group is your key? The KMS license is also used to activate the KMS host - in my case A R2 datacenter server, so I was only able to use the Group C KMS key
Volume Activation Planning Guide
If your key cannot activate the host you are installing it on it will give an invalid error.
