So my first piece of hardware is not recognised when I connect it to my WIndows 7 laptop via USB.
It is an iOmega 320GB eGo™ USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive.
It works on Vista and on XP so I sort of assumed it would work on W7.

nope, I have a Skype phone which doesn't work natively...
Then again, it didn't work in Vista either.
What you could try (which works with my skype phone) is find the driver it calls and replace the Win7 driver with the "working" one and it should get you around the problem...
You'll need to take control of the folders obviously and add yourself to the security tree, but should be good.

I've just installed windows 7 on my ergo microlite 401 and so far have several hardware devices not recognised.
Including the graphics and wireless cards.
