Oh dear, we know what happened last time Microsoft rushed to release an OS

Bit like what happened when RM rushed CC4 ... (gets coat)![]()
No more "official" beta's, the next public release is RC1.
However a newer build than the beta is floating around the internet already.
so I've installed the BETA, does it eventually die or is it a free version of Win 7(ish) for life?

expiry date of 1 july 2009 if I remember correctly

There is an updated version of the BETA around the internet, as i have gone to download it a few times. but just never had the time to look at it properly.
I have no probem with there not being any BETA's, Be nice to see how the RC1 turns out
James.
I'm hopeful, its actually got me planning to buy a new laptop once it comes out.
My other babies, of course, are staying on Linux.

Worth noting development for W7 started at the same time as dev started for Vista. So no, it's not rushed - and it was announced on the first public release of build 7000 that it would be going directly to RC pending a a successful run of that beta. What's the worse that could happen - it turns out complete rubbish and we stick with XP/Vista as we're used to.

Yes, we'll stick to XP (oh wait, they'll take that away from us soon) and Vista .. er, no that's why we wanted to stay with XP initially!
I'm hoping W7 turns out to be a good successor to XP (Vista certainly hasn't been for a lot of people) otherwise it won't be pretty.
downloading W7 now for vmware

Supposedly more stable too but I never had any problems on any of the 3 installations I have to back that up.
The Beta has been one of M$'s most successful betas for a long time - most importantly from a marketing PoV.
Shockingly I actually found myself opting to use my W7 laptop over my XP desktop at work today because I found it easier... scary.
Yes, you can call W7 "Vista R2" if you want, but that's not so different to Windows 98 being called Windows 95 R2 as well. The majority of OS's are built upon the previous iteration.
