    Desktop.ini issue

    I have the usual desktop.ini issue where My Documents is displayed. Looking for a more permanent fix than the one we currently use, a powershell script that does not seem to always do the job. Found these instructions /var/log/metasplo.it: home folders being renamed to "My Documents" - desktop.ini woes but open to offers on a better one or one that is used generally.

    We did exactly as the link you posted suggests. Works like a charm.

    This works for me...

    Based on previous threads, preventing the desktop.ini file from being created will cause problems.

    Does that reg fix work on network drives as its the redirected user folders that are being changed. Would I have to run the reg on the server the redirections are located or the client and if a folder has already been renamed do I have to do anything first?

    You can simply have the home folder inside another folder and not worry about the desktop.INI issue. So share/user/folder. The folder gets renamed to mydocs but that does not mater as it is inside a folder that has the name of your user.

    On each client.

    Delete the desktop.ini files that are inside these folders.

    I have recently solved this for us by running 2 slightly modified .cmd files to delete any current desktop.ini files, then used the File Screen Management with a custom rule to prevent the saving of files called desktop.ini

    The files are essentially:

    Code:
     @echo ON
    forfiles /p e:\students /s /m desktop.ini /c "cmd /c attrib -h -s @path"
    forfiles /p e:\students /s /m desktop.ini /c "cmd /c del @path"
    Pause
    and...

    Code:
     @echo ON
    forfiles /p e:\staff /s /m desktop.ini /c "cmd /c attrib -h -s @path"
    forfiles /p e:\staff /s /m desktop.ini /c "cmd /c del @path"
    Pause
