Unhappy Internet explorer 10 is downloading without filename extension

We are a school in the UK, we seem to be getting a couple of computers with IE 10 not downloading files incorrectly. So for example downloading a simple .pdf
it will open up the download dialog box to save in documentsetc , but save it as eh3jk23jk3hj1k2h3k21h3 without .pdf. This happens with all files when you try to download.
What is the fix for this issue and if so can we roll it out in group policy.
    thanks chris

    Or try chrome...

Le Edit - This response may seem a little facetious what I mean is: Try chrome initially as a debugging tool to prove if it's the program or a gpo or a machine build issue or what!

    Have you tried IE11?

I assume Windows is also fully up-to-date?

Make sure it's up-to-date, but also try resetting to defaults. If this doesn't work, I'd suggest re-imaging the affected workstations.

Are they shared PCs or used (largely) by just the one person?

We had it in IE10 and IE11 with single users, other users on the same PC worked fine.

The only fix we had was to reset IE settings, if that didn't work, delete two entire REG key trees and failing that, create a new profile for them.

    found local fix

we are getting this error about 3 to 4 times a week on shared pc's with roaming profiles. I found that if you delete the internet explorer folder in appdata local/roaming it will fix the issue but the user will lose all bookmarks, favourites , history etc. :c ideally would like a global fix for the issue rolling out in group policy. if the fix is just upgrading IE 10 to 11 we will just do that. we don't really wont to install Google chrome because locking down could be an issue. We don't wont users installing vpn/proxy extensions on chrome to bypass web filter etc.

I get the same issue in IE11, so that won't sort it.

There are a lot of GPOs for Google Chrome that do cover things like extensions and proxy settings and setting them generally greys out the option so that it can't be changed.
