    IE 11 - Issue

    Morning all,

We've been having a few problems with Internet Explorer 11 since we rolled it out through WSUS earlier this week.

Essentially the issue is that when users come to type anything into a text box, like in order to do a google search for example, IE doesn't allow them to type. In addition, there is a large blank bar that appears at the top of the page, pushing the rest of the page content off the screen (so you have to scroll down to find it). This isn't on every PC, and seems to affect both student, teaching and admin staff.

    Anyone experienced anything similar?

    Thanks

    Iain

Yup, we had this on just one PC. I kept rolling back the IE update, and it would happen again when IE 11 reinstalled. I believe the fix I found (and the most common one around) is this An update for the Segoe UI symbol font in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 is available - it's due to an issue with the Segoe UI font on the machine.

    Thanks for the replies :-)

I've tried this, and the update is already applied on one of the affected machines. But the problem still persists :-(

Ah - it may say the update has already been applied, but after reinstalling it anyway and restarting (plus removing IE11, then reinstalling it) it worked for us.

Thanks again for coming back to me..

I've uninstalled IE11 and the update and reinstalled both.....but the problem is still there :-( I can go back to IE9, and this does get rid of the problem, however I only approved IE10 & 11 to get rid of an issue I had in IE9 :-( (the problem I had in IE9 was that when you click google search, it would open hundreds of tabs in IE).

    Any other suggestions?

Try sticking with IE10 - on the surface it looks the same as IE9, but it's rock solid and have it deployed at all sites. I've still got IE11 on block via WSUS as it still creates too many issues.

    Thanks Michael,

I tried that on one of the Pc's that's got the issue, however the issue then exists on IE10 as well :-(

IE11 didn't break my test PC like this :-(

You haven't applied any specific IE GPOs have you? Does this behaviour happen for all users, including admins?

The behaviour happens for all users.

There's no specific GPO's for IE with the exception of setting home pages and proxy settings.

Do you use Smart Notebook software? If so, disable Smart Ink.

    Hi Skell,

Thanks for the suggestion, have you experienced this issue? Did this fix it?

    Thanks

Yes and yes. We updated to SmartNotebook 11.4 and it seemed to fix the issue.

I haven't seen this one Ian but we have had IE 11 issues to deal with...........like searching and not being able to go back after you've searched......and people not being able to access favorites from the list......(sorry if that's not the correct way of spelling it!) - I think it's something to do with group policy as ours isn't happening for admins.....anyway sorry to derail a bit! Never had problems with IE 10....

    Thanks again Skell,

Just disabled Smartink, and it resolved the issue. I'm now looking into upgrading SmartNotebook to the latest version......although apparently I now have to pay for upgrades!!
