File saving / locking errors on network drives

    Good morning folks,

We have a bit of a strange issue starting to appear intermittently on our network:-

When a user tries to save / resave a document, or delete or rename a folder they are intermittently getting some weird issues:-

    • On the majority of cases it saves/works correctly
    • Users are sometime getting an error saying their is a network permissions error and the file saves with zero bytes
    • Users are sometimes getting a message when deleting or renaming a folder saying the file/folder is in use - please try again

Saving under a different name will usually work (although very occasionally not).

    Now the tech bit:-
    • Workstations are running Windows 7 enterprise, 32bit
    • Server is Windows Server 2012
    • Shares are in the format of \\server\username$ (hidden share)
    • Share has been mapped to a drive letter and the user is trying to save to the drive letter
    • Share permissions are set to everyone, full control
    • Security is set to Domain Admins - full permission, User has modify rights.
    • Network is running on Procurve 1Gb switches with spanning tree enabled

Hopefully that gives all the info you need, and someone may have an idea of a resolution to this.

Have you recently upgraded Office from 2003 to 2007 or 2010? I've seen this sort of thing when doing just that.

We are running Office 2010, however it's not an upgrade - it was installed clean.

Sorry, I meant did you move to your current v of Office just prior to this happening? I ask only because this can cause the problems you mention.

We moved about a year back. The problem has only been apparent since then, but that was alongside a lot of other changes such as the move to Windows 7, so wasn't able to pint it down to that.

Do you know what it is about Office 2010 that causes the issue?

If you moved a year ago and it's only just started to happen, then I don't think it will be the same problem. If it is, it usually sorts itself out after a while because the files get saved in the new version as people use them. I think there may be a fix from Microsoft, but no longer have any links I'm afraid. We mostly advised staff just to retry (which often worked) or save as a slightly different name - after which those files were fine.

Make sure you have the enterprise hotfix rollup installed on servers and clients. And the file services updates. See: http://www.edugeek.net/showthread.ph...24#post1094424

    And the latest shell32.dll:

    Also the latest Office Updates:
