    Uninstall Google Chrome with gpo

    HI Everyone

    Please can you help. Loads of students have installed chrome from the internet and its broken the file association with internet explorer. This means the shortcuts we have on the desktop dont work.

    The students have tried using googgle chrome plugins to hack the network so we are having to remove google chrome and we have found we can do this with putting the install file in a share and running the following command as a script .

    "\\hp-dc\software$\chrome removal\31.0.1650.57\Installer\setup.exe" --uninstall --chrome --msi --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

    This removes the chrome but does not restore the default browser with Internet Explorer.

    I have tried reg mods but this does NOT WORK.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.htm]
    @="htmlfile"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html]
    @="htmlfile"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.shtml]
    @="htmlfile"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.xhtm]
    @="htmlfile"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.xhtml]
    @="htmlfile"

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.xht]
    @="htmlfile"

    The only work round is to log onto every machine and go into internet explorer and click the default browser button. As we have so many machines this is not a option.

    Has anyone got a work round.

    Richard

    Why do you have to remove Google chrome?

    You can block the Google plugins with the GPO.

    We run it school wide here with no problems.

    If you create a shortcut from iexplore.exe to your desktop, right click it and specify (for example):

    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.google.co.uk/
    I presume you're using Folder Redirection, so just overwrite the shortcuts as required. This should buy you time to remove Chrome.

    1) prevent users from downloading .exe/.msi files
    2) use group policy, software restriction policies to block users from running chrome.exe with a path rule
    3) assuming users have roaming appdata, run a search on the server and remove the directories
    4) Default Browser via Group policy

    It does depend on your ie version. 10+ will have to use prefrences.
    Why not block exes on your proxy?

    We block students from chromes as they have been trying to hack the network with the plugins. Some are installing it which plug ins can be blocked but other are managing to run portable copies that cannot . Have been told to uninstall. Have had to block the .exe with gpo.

    The students are bringing them on memory stick and moving them to network to run them as blocked under gpo from running exe
    Students using client local profiles.

    Thanks for the link it says to use internet maintenance in gpo but I cannot find it. We have a windows 2012 domain controller. Do I have to update my admx and if so where from.

    This should already be blocked but have just moved to a new firewall so will check.

    I Would recommend you run this as a Per User script also as it apply s to the current user reg keys and if a user has chrome as default and you rip it off no browser will open on clicking links.

    Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

    objShell.RegDelete("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mic rosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.h tm\UserChoice\")
    objShell.RegDelete("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mic rosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.h tml\UserChoice\")

    t=objShell.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mi crosoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations \https\UserChoice\Progid","IE.HTTPS","REG_SZ")
    t=objShell.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mi crosoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations \http\UserChoice\Progid","IE.HTTP","REG_SZ")
    t=objShell.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mi crosoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations \ftp\UserChoice\Progid","IE.FTP","REG_SZ")

    t=objShell.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mi crosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\. htm\UserChoice\Progid","IE.AssocFile.HTM","REG_SZ" )
    t=objShell.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mi crosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\. html\UserChoice\Progid","IE.AssocFile.HTM","REG_SZ ")

    t=objShell.RegWrite("HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cl ients\StartmenuInternet\","iexplore.exe","REG_SZ")
    t=null

    Hope this helps
