Question t##*.1 files appearing in root of C:\ drive

Where ## is a 2-digit number and * is usually a letter, but not always.

These are all 0KB files and they appear every few months or so. The filenames appear to scale/sequential in some manner, for example, the one I have right in front of me now is:
    Code:
    t14g.1, 04/07/2013 11:53
    t148.1, 20/06/2013 13:15
    t15o.1, 19/06/2013 14:20
    t13o.1, 10/10/2012 09:03
    t13s.1, 20/03/2012 14:17
    t144.1, 06/07/2012 10:09
    t14k.1, 01/05/2012 07:39
    t134.1, 26/09/2011 10:12
The files are Archived files, owned by the local Administrators group. Opens with: Windows Shell Common [?] (halfway through the N of common, the string extends beyond its allocated space and disappears)

Does anybody have any clue what these files are..? They're appearing on pretty much all of our machines.
