    Profiles on Windows 7

    Morning,

i have come across a problem in that our students profiles are storing there temp internet files and these are up to 500mb.

Problem is the students are taking a long time to log off.

    Any help would be great?

    Thanks in advance

why dont you just delete the temp internet when browser closes?

    GPO - User Configuration
    Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Internet Control Panel\Advanced Page
Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed

    Which browsers are you using?

If You're using IE, you can look at:

    Within User Configuration:

Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Control Panel > Advanced Page > Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed

I would ask if maybe roaming profiles are a wise choice for students in this day and age - mandatory work well and certainly solve this sort of problem and save you a *hell* of a lot of hassle and disk space for backing up too!

Thanks for the replys, yes i will look atr gpos, i have 1 question.

We use Bloxx web filtering and it monitors and stores the webpages of a user, my worry is that if they empty temp internet files on closing of browser will it cause issues with bloxx (im thinking not)

    We use IE8

    Thanks

it shouldnt affect the bloxx setup - if it captures a screen shot it pull it at the time and stores locally to bloxx - all internet logs are stored on the proxy directly.

test it with gpo set just on a test user at least it will then put your mind at ease.

+1 for mandatory profiles. With the desktop and start menu locked down to network shares, no access to styles, backgrounds etc, BGInfo controlling the wallpaper and redirected home directories there is no need for roaming profiles any more (well at my place anyway...)

Temporary Internet Files should never be part of the roaming profile, as it is stored in AppData\Local, which by definition should not roam. If this folder is being copied to their roaming profile directory on the server, it is almost certainly a symptom of a partially-corrupted profile. Deleting and recreating the profile always fixes it in my experience.

yes it does copy back appdata\local part of the profile, and we re-create many profiles here, as many students also lose desktop shortscuts that are set by us.

I am now going to change the temp internet files

    Thanks

we also use Adobe CS5 for Media purposes, and the profiles are also copying back the Media Cache, which is 700mb at times, is there a can write that out of the student profiles?

Anyone can help with blocking certian files writing back to the system in students profiles, can you write such a thing as an exclude list?

    Thanks

if your running 2008 r2 you can install the file server resource manager allows you to add filtering on! there is another for previous server editions i cant recall but its file resource manager you need

your looking for the file screening management - this allows you to block file types

    +2 for mandatory profiles.

Our mandatory profile is about 5mb and logins are from password to desktop about 5- 15 seconds dependant on spec of computer.

We also do some little reghacks that give the appearance of a roaming profile.... On logout some registry keys for Word/excel are exported to the users home area, and re-applied on login . Gives them the ability to alter the toolbars etc in office 2010 without a huge roaming profile.

You need to setup the Adobe Software correctly. When you start a new project you can specify in Adobe Premier where it puts Cache files as they really do need them for the software to work optimally so you move them to a share and voilla no more large profile for Adobe.
