I think your point 6 sums up what I have found exactly! I was getting all sorts of random errors, but the main one was the the specified port is invalid one.

I know this is a bit late, but I found with the specified port is unknown error even a script didnt always deploy the printer. I eventually found a microsoft hotfix Kb2748246.
and here is a link on how to deploy hotfix Kb2748246 as its not in the a wsus catalogue !!! Grrr
I spent ages trying to solve this problem so im hoping this post might help some people.

Thanks Chunks, i'll give this a go when I get a chance. Had been driving us nuts in the past until I changed to scripts.
