Domain registration expired, but hosting company not responding to emails!

I have a domain name registered for a local charity. We found that dns records dropped off the internet a few weeks ago.

No contact from the hosting company, but it transpired our two yearly hosting fee was due.

This was duly paid online, and a email sent to support requesting re-enabling the dns records.

I have yet to hear from them!

unfortunaly nslookup shows that the domain name is registered with fasthosts, on behalf of the company I pay, no mention of our details, so I suspect I can`t just contact nominet and move the domain.

Of course all our official email addresses etc run via the domain, so it is very difficult to prove who we are to nominet etc...

If the hosting company have gone bust (which is my suspiscion), how long will it take for fasthosts to release the domain so I can re-register it with someone else?

Based on his post I suspect the domain is registered in the company name and not the charity which I don't think is good news! It's always best to register your own domain, with a different provider if necessary, as having your eggs in one basket can lead to trouble as you have discovered.

If you cannot get any reply from the hosting company you can leave the domain to expire but it doesn't appear in the 'system' again for a good few months, to my knowledge. You really need the host to transfer it to you!

I had hosts go bust on me.... domain wasn't with them but loosing all files but a backup from 2007 was a b*tch.... my own fault I know, but still, lol.

I've noticed a lot of hosts going bust as of late, as Carl said, if you would like to PM me the host's name maybe I can dig something if carl can't?

I'd imagine fasthosts would release it pretty quick if you explain and have proof of the company going bust if that's the situation...
