Update php on Joomla
I've got a joomla 1.5.23 system running PHP 5.3.3 - I would like to update the PHP to latest version to remove some of the security flaws.
Question is, I've tried to do this by downloading PHP 5.3.8 from php.net and running the configure and install, but the Joomla still reports '5.3.3ubuntu9.5' as the PHP version.
How do I update php correctly for my joomla system?

The Joomla system doesn't run PHP - the ubuntu server it's hosted on runs apache/ PHP and Joomla uses this.
To update php on the ubuntu server log into it and run 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' and this will upgrade all the system packages including PHP to the lastest version for the version of ubuntu the host is running.
If you don't have root access to the ubuntu server - sahred hosting etc - then you can't upgrade the php version.

I finally managed to do it, by adding the dotdeb.org repository and then reinstalling php5, which picked up their latest version of 5.3.8
Now for the 'upgrade' to joomla 1.7!
